As the Sun begins its journey from Dakshinayana (south) to Uttarayana (north) in the sky, the rise in temperature mobilises the accumulated Kapha during winter season. The accumulated and aggravated Kapha should be cleansed from the body. A spring cleansing or Detox or Panchkarma is specially recommended to get rid of all the indulgence done in last few cold months. Kapha has natural tendency to make body heavy, movements sluggish and slow, and in some it could lead to aggravation of allergies, congestion and sinusitis (chronic cold), indigestion, nausea and excess saliva. A gradual shift in daily routine, diet and yoga asana are recommended to bring your rhythm back.

Some of the essentials recommended in Ayurveda to be followed during spring (Vasant) season are –
Dietary changes – Eat light, greens which have bitter, pungent and astringent taste, avoid heavy, sour and sweet articles. Herbal tea with lemon, honey, ginger and cinnamon is good for digestion, improves Agni and reduces Kapha.

Regular exercise – spring is the ideal time to cut that extra flab, begin exercise to half of your capacity on regular basis. Yoga asana which target digestive fire and liver are beneficial like – paschimottasana, ardha matsyadrasana, and merudand asana. To reduce lethargy and lack of concentration during this season do Kapalbhati, bhastrika and surya bhedan pranayama. Staying in Sun (Atapasevan) for short duration helps to get rid of laziness created by Kapha. Massage from Kapha pacifying oils also helps to regain a balance state faster. Mustard oil processed in Holy basil, Arjuna, clove, cinnamon, black pepper and long pepper improves circulation and aids in detoxification. Avoid sleeping during day time, unless very essential.

The dry breeze and long sunny days impact leads to a combination skin which at times is extremely dry and sometimes oily. The dead skin cells become more evident, flakiness and itching increases, complexion becomes dull. Gentle exfoliation by natural ingredients like oat flour, powdered shells of almond, brown sugar, rock salt and rose petals, revives skin and makes it more supple and smooth. After exfoliation moisturize your skin with non-clogging formulation, natural oils from Avocado, Almond and Peach are some of the options. Protection from harmful UV rays is important throughout the year but one can unknowingly suffer from sun burns because of quick fluctuations in temperature during this season. Sun screens which are rich in biological filters like Calendula, Saffron, Avocado oil, and Shea butter restores skin’s natural oils and protect from UV rays.

As the temperature begins to rise in spring, sweat and sebum on face could lead to outbreak of acne, to control this one could use refreshing toners like Rose, Holy basil to cleanse the face without drying and minimizing the skin pores.

Follow the old ritual of cleansing toning and moisturizing twice a day to make your skin ready for spring like fresh blooming flowers.
